PhD student - Cybersecurity in the mining industry

Your mission
To within 4 years of research studies receive a doctor´s hat in Cybersecurity! A modern mine relies on a plethora of different devices, technologies, and standards, that enhance the complicated task of ensuring a cyber-secure environment.

As an industrial PhD student at Epiroc you will work in close collaboration with the academic team and researchers at Örebro University to investigate cybersecurity challenges related to connectivity, authentication modes, data processing, and integration of modern AI tools within the digitalized mining environment. 
You will explore the cybersecurity threats originated from the deployment of IoT devices and sensors in a challenging environment such as a mine and in an autonomous mode of operation. 

You will analyze vulnerabilities and countermeasures that stem from different aspects, from limited connectivity issues (e.g., utilization of opportunistic networks or blockchain-based authentication) to the integration of AI-based algorithms across a distributed network, for example by deploying federated learning models.

Your Profile
For admission to doctoral studies, applicants are required to meet both general entry requirements and specific entry requirements. In addition, applicants must be considered in other respects to have the ability required to benefit from the programme as outlined by Örebro University.
Applicants meet the specific entry requirements for research studies in computer science if they have been awarded a Degree of Master of Science in Engineering or a one-year Master's degree from a programme within the subject field or related subjects, or if he or she has received a passing grade of at least 120 credits, including an independent project on the second cycle, in a main field of study of relevance to the computer science field. A person who has acquired substantially corresponding knowledge, in Sweden or abroad, also meets the specific entry requirements.
The successful candidate should show strong and independent problem solving and critical analytical abilities.
Fluent spoken and written command of English is essential, while knowledge of Swedish is not necessary. 
Having courses, a thesis, or publications in the field of cybersecurity is a merit.
The candidate must have the ability to cooperate with other researchers and with industrial partners.

Life at Örebro University
As a PhD student, you will be part of Örebro University doctoral studies and part of the SIGS-Cybersec, a Swedish Industrial Graduate School on Cybersecurity that consists of a consortium of Computer Science and Information Systems researchers from four Swedish universities: Karlstad University, Blekinge Institute of Technology, the Swedish Defence University, and Örebro University.
The consortium has, for over more than two decades, built up excellent and internationally leading research profiles and courses in different and complementing cybersecurity specialization areas. As a doctoral candidate, you will have access to a multi-disciplinary cybersecurity research network, composed of the four consortium partners and 8 Swedish leading industrial partners. In co-production, the consortium offers a broad range of cybersecurity research competencies and an innovative training network.
