About Voice of the Ocean and Ocean Knowledge
The non-profit foundation Voice of the Ocean (VOTO), aims to increase public and scientific knowledge of the Health of the Oceans, specifically focusing on the Baltic Sea and connected seas. At the Ocean Knowledge branch of VOTO, based in Gothenburg, we focus on Marine Technology and scientific data collection with the goal of the data and our work being open to the scientific community. Currently supporting six underwater gliders and two autonomous surface vessels, the Ocean Knowledge Team aims to increase the fleet size significantly, requiring both technical and scientific support, to ensure the best possible data collection.
Data Engineer/Scientist, Oceanography

The Data Engineer/Scientist will be responsible for ensuring our observational data meets FAIR guidelines and is stored and delivered in a safe and well documented way. They will work closely with the science coordinator, oceanographers, technicians and external contractors to achieve their goals and will be responsible for the tools and documentation relating to processes used within the group. The work will initially be to build and design our data pipeline for QC and distribution of our AUV, Glider and ASV collected oceanographic data, in addition to taking lead in developing a plan and structure for future tools regarding distribution, QC and visualization as well as contributing to the related scientific community.
Specifically, some of the roles will include:
Oversight, design and “actioning” the data flow; ensuring the Near Real Time data is transmitted from the platforms to the server, and shared with data providers
Build our data pipeline infrastructure, tools and manage associated external contractors
Storing final processed datasets and ensuring products are deliverable to partners and collaborators
Documenting and following best practices for data processing which will be decided in conjunction with the Scientific Coordinator
Contribute to scientific community tools that we use e.g Glider Tools

Required Skills and Education:
Masters degree or equivalent in Natural Sciences or Data Sciences
Proficient in an appropriate coding language (e.g. Python)
Previous experience managing continuous data streams
Previous experience managing Oceanographic data
Motivated to assist with development of best practices within the community

Beneficial Skills and Education:
Degree in Oceanography
Previous experience with AUVs, ASVs or Gliders
Knowledge in environments and tools such as Jupyter, Git, ERDAP
