Arbetsbeskrivning
We are now recruiting another research engineer to the group of Data Science Research Engineers. As a Data Science Research Engineer you will be working in direct contact with one or more research projects within Chalmers.
Information about the research area
Data driven research using machine learning is becoming increasingly important for the research activities at Chalmers. To extract valuable patterns from a large number of data sources and to meet the related challenges, Chalmers has a group of Data Science Research Engineers using applied machine learning in research projects involving large data sets and AI.
The work in the group is performed in close connection to the Chalmers AI Research Centre (CHAIR), providing access to interdisciplinary AI research challenges of relevance for industry and society. The group is integrated in the Chalmers e-Commons digital research infrastructure, a strategic effort providing a wide span of expertise and resources for supporting research at Chalmers. For example, Chalmers e-Commons hosts cutting-edge computational resources specifically adapted to large-scale machine learning applications and expertise able to assist in the implementation of such applications.
The group is working with large data sets from various sources, coming from both the natural sciences as well as digital platforms across society and social science. We are also active in cross-domain collaborations and this includes research on data analysis of gender equality done in collaboration with the Chalmers effort GENIE.
Job description
The Data Science Research Engineers are, based on their specific profiles, working in close collaboration to one or more research projects developing tools and analysis methods for data driven research activities. The aim is to develop and implement new research data analysis in existing platforms or in some cases develop a data analysis pipeline from the ground up. If needed, you will have the opportunity to use modern large-scale computing resources for implementing the research. You will get to work with a broad spectrum of different types of data, and be an essential part of the process of finding patterns in data that lead to new scientific insights. Part of the time will be set aside to learn new methods and establish general competencies in Data Science/ML for yourself, also to take on responsibilities within the group and sharing knowledge to other groups at Chalmers.
The competencies sought are specifically machine learning and statistics applied to large and complex data sets, but you are also expected to have the capacity to learn and apply tools and methods from a range of other data science related areas, e.g., data mining and information visualization. It should be natural for you to think critically about when methods apply and not to the data at hand, and to discuss this with others. This is done together with a team of research engineers with similar roles as well as with researchers. We collaborate internally and with research groups to discuss, implement, evaluate, and communicate our results.
Contract terms
This employment is a permanent full-time employment with a probationary period of 6-months.
Qualifications
A minimum of Master-level education in e.g. computer science, mathematics or mathematical statistics is expected, but PhD-level and other educational backgrounds may be suitable depending on the specific skills and experience of the applicant. Documented experience in previously applying some of the skills outlined above, as well as software development in general is expected and experience in programming needs to be demonstrated. Good communication and collaborative skills are essential, as good research is often a matter of creative team work. You need to be an easy-going person not only passionate about developing your skills in machine learning and programming, but also open to learn about new areas. Previous work in research projects is meriting. You find it natural to learn a new subject by reading research papers about it.
We are also considering PhDs from relevant fields of quantitative research, interested in applied research based on data from different areas connected to Chalmers research.
Candidates with a strong domain specific background with capability and a motivation to develop a data science career in an academic environment are welcome.
Application procedure
The application should be marked with Name, Ref 20210410 and be attached as PDF files, as below:
CV
Personal letter
Other documents (optional):
• Copies of completed education, grades etc. Two references that we can contact should be provided at a possible interview.
