Data Scientist for analysis of biological sequences

Data Scientist for analysis of biological sequences

Arbetsbeskrivning

We seek a curious, self-driven machine learning researcher interested in applying his/her skills to solve highly applied world-changing biological problems. Specifically, you will have an opportunity to develop novel algorithms for protein-based drug design. The project has a high-potential move from an academic experiment to a spin-off company aiming to solve protein-based drug design and expression problems using AI. If you are proactive and passionate about AI research, its application and believe in ideas that can be realized by creating high-tech startups, this project is for you.

Information about the project and the division
This project is supported by Wallenberg Launch Pad (WALP) program and will be conducted at the Department of Biology and Biological engineering, at the division of Systems and Synthetic Biology. The Division of Systems and Synthetic Biology at the Chalmers University of Technology is one of the world's leading research groups within systems and synthetic biology of metabolism. Our research interests involve a wide range of activities from the fundamental understanding of cellular operation principles, combined with a highly applied research directed towards the development of new cell factories for the production of socioeconomically valuable chemicals/proteins/drugs. Our division is highly interdisciplinary collaborative research environment where both computational biologists and wet lab scientists working together towards making a better future for our planet.

Major responsibilities
- You will apply advanced statistical / ML methods and work with large, complex biological datasets (mainly sequence data).
- You will propose, design and analyze new algorithms to benefit protein sequence analysis.

Qualifications
- MSc or PhD degree in machine learning or related field.
- 3+ years of working experience with deep neural networks frameworks and practical understanding of the algorithms and mathematics behind modern machine learning approaches is a must.
- You have experience implementing new algorithms and data engineering/analysis aspects in Python, or you have research experience in at least three of the following research areas: Bioinformatics, Machine Learning, Statistics, Natural Language Processing, Generative modelling, Immunological informatics.
- Proficiency with Linux and scripting languages.
- Practical understanding of the mathematics behind modern machine learning, linear algebra and statistics.
- Proven ability to apply statistical techniques to tackle real problems.
- Ability to take requirements from design to implementation both independently and with larger teams under tight deadline constraints.
- Understanding of biology and bioinformatics is desirable.
