Deputy Director
Right Livelihood is a courage-powered community for social change. Established in 1980, we are committed to peace, justice, and sustainability for all. Each year, we present the Right Livelihood Award. By recognising the actions of brave visionaries and building impactful connections around the world, the Award boosts urgent and long-term social change. We also provide these change-makers with long-term support. We work to raise their profile, spread their solutions, provide protection when their lives and liberty are in danger, and link them with academia.
With offices in Stockholm and Geneva, Right Livelihood has 20 staff and an annual budget of EUR 4 million. We have consultative status with the United Nations and active partnerships with universities on all continents.
We have set ourselves an ambitious goal: By 2030, we aim to be recognised globally, not only as a prize-awarding institution, but as an agenda-setter, expert voice and a widely-used source of inspiration and education for social change.
Purpose of the role
To help us achieve our goal, we are looking for an experienced, mission-driven leader to join us in this newly-created position as Deputy Director. This role will lead the implementation of Right Livelihood’s strategy and shape its organisational development in close partnership with the Executive Director. The person in this position will be a dynamic, people-oriented driver for sustainable organisational growth equipping us with the systems and tools to ensure we operate and collaborate effectively and meet our goals.
Responsibilities
Work in partnership with the Executive Director to implement the organisational strategy, translating strategic goals into measures, work plans, and strategic, operational, and financial metrics.
Support the Executive Director by taking over selective operational responsibilities, especially in programme and communications work.
Provide a strong day-to-day leadership presence by guiding, supporting, and empowering staff and ensuring they thrive individually as well as collectively.
Lead Right Livelihood’s organisational development, building processes and fostering a culture and work environment that enables us to achieve our strategic goals.
Design and oversee the implementation of a people-strategy for recruitment, staff development, and organisational learning.
Required experience and qualifications
10+ years of professional work experience with 5+ years in relevant leadership roles, including in the non-profit sector.
Demonstrated success in managing for impact with senior-level staff and budget planning responsibility.
Senior experience in organisational development.
Strong commitment to Right Livelihood’s mission and values.
Full professional proficiency in English.
Additional experience and qualifications
Experience of generating public engagement and visibility by a combination of programme/advocacy/communications work.
Experience in human resources management.
Professional proficiency in Swedish, French, or German.
