The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Deputy Head of Integrated Control System Division.



Description of division?
The Integrated Control System division is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of control systems for the ESS facility including Accelerator, Target, Neutron Scattering Instruments and Conventional Facilities. When completed, ESS will be the world’s leading laboratory in the field of neutron related material research.

The delivery of a world-class control system for the ESS facility is the responsibility of the division management, and the Deputy Head of the division will play a significant role in the creation of, and leadership for this highly complex control system. Because of the complexity of the system, the demand for high availability and reliability of the facility for the neutron science users will be a challenge for the control system, and innovative solutions will be needed to meet these requirements. The Deputy Head of division will be a core member of the team addressing these requirements. During the construction phase, ESS desires participation from our In-kind partners to deliver components and/or integration of components to the facility. The Deputy Head of the ICS division will take the lead in developing the In-kind potential for the ESS Control Systems.


Main responsibilities



• Support the division leader for all his roles in the management of the division organisation

• Replace the division leader in ESS and ICS management meetings if the division leader is absent

• Implement decisions, policies and strategies defined and agreed upon by the ICS division management

• Be responsible in conjunction with the rest of the ICS division management for the availability and reliability requirements for the control system

• Cultivate and manage collaborations with ICS external and In-kind partners

• Be responsible for the division’s staff plan, recruitment and assignment of office space

• Perform other tasks that are relevant to the position


Qualifications



• MSc in Engineering or Physics and at least 10 years of experience in the field of control systems for accelerators or equivalent

• Significant experience of line management in a similar role at a scientific organisation or laboratory

• Demonstrated leadership capabilities in the development of control systems and knowledgeable of control system frameworks, preferably EPICS

• Extensive knowledge of the processes and management of In-kind collaborations (or similar)

• Experience within either software and hardware development, device integration, driver and device support development or embedded platforms development, and understanding of availability and reliability requirements for control systems

• Experience of working in an international environment is essential

• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
