The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Deputy Project Manager position at the Integrated Controls Systems division.

Description of directorate/division

You will join the Integrated Control System division, which is designing, constructing, commissioning and operating the global control system for the ESS facility. The global control system can be described as the "neural system" of the ESS facility that monitors and controls most of the operational aspects. We cover a wide range of sensing, control and automation technology from highly customized electronics specific for ESS applications to standardized PLCs.

Description of main responsibilities 

As Deputy Project Manager you are responsible for driving project activities within all Integrated Control Systems subgroups; Hardware integration, Control Software, Protection and safety systems and some smaller groups.

The project scope contains a mix from highly innovative technical development subprojects to high-reliability precision installation activities with many transversal stakeholders both inside and outside ESS.

ICS is implementing a variant of the classical line/project matrix organizational model with emphasis on alignment between line and project. The ICS team is a highly international team of control system specialists. The team size will vary between 30 – 70 people during different phases of the ESS construction project. In this environment it is important that you have the right combination of driving, listening and coordination skills to be able to manage project activities with internal and external stakeholders.

You are expected to be an active and driving contributor in the ICS management team. You are expected to travel to a moderate extent, primarily within Europe.

Qualifications

Required competencies: 


• M.Sc. or similar.
• Solid experience from project management over a wide range of environments, including software, hardware and systems integration
• Experience from managing complex system projects
• Good people skills with experience from working in project/line matrix organizations
• Solid experience and expertise from requirement management, planning, estimation, execution and follow-up of project work.
• Solid experience from working in international contexts with proven professional understanding of cultural differences
• Excellent communication skills in English orally and written

The following experiences are considered as beneficial but not required:


• Working within scientific/academic environments
• Experience from EPICS-based control system software or similar
• Experience from managing complex control system projects
• General understanding of electronics/hardware and software interaction
• Experience from working with project planning tools, primarily Primavera 6
• Experience from active risk management
• Experience of Earned Value methodology
• Project management certification of some kind

You have a collaborative mindset and enjoy contributing to and driving a dynamic team. You have a pioneering personality with creativity, ingenuity and perseverance. As a deputy project manager, we expect you to have all the needed people skills to manage a high performing and dynamic team.

Your presentation and language skills are also important to us. Excellent communication skills are required and you must be able to explain/simplify complex hardware-software interactions and system integration for other developers/users/customers. You have good knowledge of different project methodologies and experience applying them.
