ESS is now looking for a Deuteration Chemist for the Deuteration and Macromolecular Crystallization support team, organised within the Scientific Activities Divison, as part of the Science Directorate. 

Job description

This position is 1-year limited term for a Deuteration Chemist within our Deuteration and Macromolecular Crystallization (DEMAX) support team. The recruit will work in an independent way on tasks related to DEMAX user proposals and method development but also support other DEMAX scientists. The recruit will be expected to participate in day-to-day running of the labs.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have:


• M.Sc. or PhD in chemistry/biochemistry/biotechnology or a related discipline with 1-2 years practical work experience using organic compounds and chemicals.
• Hands-on experience and a good understanding of thin-layer chromatography, gas chromatography and liquid chromatography is essential
• Knowledge of and experience in lipid synthesis or extraction/purification/analysis from cell cultures is desirable
• Experience of analytical/preparative HPLC and/or mass spectrometry analysis of lipids would be beneficial
• Experience in or an interest to learn to culture cells (yeast, bacteria) would be beneficial
• Experience with general laboratory housekeeping activities, including waste disposal, chemical/consumable ordering, chemical barcoding and inventory, as well as maintaining and calibrating equipment used is required.
• The ability to work independently as well as to support and collaborate with other DEMAX staff members
• An interest and ability to learn new techniques and methods
• The ability to contribute to reports and publications on methods developed and results obtained.
• An interest to participate in conferences, workshops, meetings, and outreach activities if relevant and necessary.

We also welcome more experienced applicants from other neutron facilities or deuteration laboratories on a secondment basis.

Duration & Location

The position is a fixed term position of 1 year, starting 2020-06-01.

Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
