Digital Electronics Engineer

Arbetsbeskrivning

Company Description
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Job Description
Introduction

Are you a skilled digital electronics engineer who is passionate about conceiving, designing and testing state of the art electronic for accelerators at the high energy and intensity frontier? CERN, take part!

You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators. The SY teams design, build and operate equipment systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward-looking R&D programmes.

The position will be in the Beam Position Section (BP) of the Beam Instrumentation Group.

You will take part in designing, manufacturing and commissioning of large and complex transverse position monitoring systems for the charged particle beams that are operated daily in the CERN accelerator complex.

Functions

As a Digital Electronics Engineer specialising in Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) design, your main task will be to develop, test and maintain the FPGA gateware and firmware used in the acquisition chain of the beam position monitoring systems deployed across the CERN accelerator complex.

The job will involve:

-The design of digital acquisition electronics based on field programmable logic-based devices (FPGA);
-The design of digital signal processing algorithms for the extraction of beam characteristics;
-The design and qualification of radiation tolerant electronic modules;
-The design and test of front-end digital acquisition electronics systems operating in the Gbps regime;
-The design and verification of safety critical FPGA firmware;
-Test, installation, and maintenance of large-scale electronic acquisition systems in CERN's accelerators;
-Optimisation of the performance of these instruments in partnership with the CERN Operations Group.

Qualifications
Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electronics engineering or a related field.

Experience:

-Demonstrated experience in the field of electronics engineering with emphasis on the design of digital electronics using field programmable logic-based devices (FPGA) and digital signal processing techniques;
-Experience with multi Giga-sample per second ADCs, SystemOnChip FPGA design and radiation effects to electronics, would be an asset.

Technical competencies:

-Design and simulation of FPGA-based electronics;
-Knowledge and application of signal theory, mathematical techniques and tools;
-Design and simulation of digital electronic circuits;
-Testing and measurement of digital electronic circuits;
-Knowledge of radiation effects on electronics and mitigation techniques.

Behavioural competencies:

-Achieving results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations.
-Working in teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships; working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.
-Demonstrating flexibility: demonstrating openness to new ideas and situations; being willing to work on different projects simultaneously.
-Solving problems: identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them; finding the information needed to solve problems; making objective judgments based on all the facts available.

Language skills:

-Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts.
-Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages.
