Discovery Safety Scientists / Senior Scientists

Arbetsbeskrivning

At AstraZeneca we win through science, it’s at the heart of our every success. That science is only possible when we all work together – we’ll always make sure you’re clear about how your role is connected to our wider mission to really show what science can do.

Bring your scientific excellence to Discovery Safety and become a key player in the discovery of innovative medicines

One of the major challenges in the discovery of innovative medicines is to ensure they are safe enough to provide novel treatments for patients. In Discovery Safety, a global department that is part of our Drug Safety and Metabolism function, we apply innovative science to drive the design and selection of safer medicines. As true Drug Hunting partners to our Innovative Medicines units, we contribute to the selection of novel drug targets, design of therapeutic concepts, identification and optimization of new chemical series as well as a range of other modalities, and selection of novel candidate drugs. We develop and apply cutting edge in silico, molecular, cellular and in vivo technologies and push the boundaries of predictive safety science and investigative toxicology with our mission in mind: driving our science to bring better, safer medicines to patients sooner.

In Drug Safety and Metabolism, we place a strong emphasis on talent development. You will be able to develop your scientific leadership by working together with leaders in investigative toxicology, drug discovery, cell biology and predictive safety science.

For our Discovery Safety team in Gothenburg, Sweden, we are looking for two

Discovery Safety Scientists / Senior Scientists

Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Design and execute experimental strategies to predict, assess and mitigate target- and drug-related safety risks in discovery programs.
- Translate theoretical drug target safety assessments into concrete experimental plans and action.
- Drive the development of molecular and cellular mechanistic understanding of toxicological aspects and safety concerns around innovative drug discovery projects.
- Deliver experimental data that impact project decision making with the aim to develop molecules with the “Right Safety” profile.
- Integrate novel in vitro safety assays and technologies to drive our predictive toxicology scientific capabilities forward.

Essential Requirements
- Excellent scientist, with a PhD in cell biology, toxicology, pharmacology, systems biology or related field, and evidence of a strong scientific track record and problem-solving capabilities.
- Theoretical and practical knowledge of, and experience with, techniques and technologies relevant to in vitro systems, including cell culture and cell-based assay systems utilising cell lines and primary cells (examples could include high content screening, -omics technologies, advanced cell systems, gene editing, microphysiological systems).
- Extensive experience in experimental design and generation and interpretation of high quality experimental data and translating scientific findings into applicable information.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, ability to work across multi-disciplinary teams.
- Highly motivated, creative, innovative, reliable scientist, with a flexible, collaborative, team-oriented mindset, who solves problems in a goal-focused fashion and is keen to create impact.
- A social personality that contributes to an open, positive, collaborative working climate, and a strong desire to drive personal development.

Desired Requirements
- Understanding of the drug discovery process from experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
- Experience with design and execution of in vitro experiments to determine the effects of therapeutics on biological systems, including data analysis.
- Knowledge of predictive toxicology, safety and risk assessment.

More than ever, science is accelerating our rate of understanding in a wide range of medical fields – and that’s only set to increase. As a global, science-led biopharmaceutical business, AstraZeneca is at the forefront of that evolution. That means an unparalleled product portfolio and a strong pipeline across all stages of the drug development process. Everything we do comes back to improving the health of our patients worldwide, and to make that happen we’re focusing on some of the most challenging diseases facing humanity today.

We have a highly collaborative culture, where you’ll be encouraged to push the boundaries of science while developing industry-recognised skills and experiences.
