The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) is among the largest departments of epidemiology in Europe with special focus on increasing our knowledge of the aetiology of different diseases. Our department consists of researchers, doctoral students, biostatisticians, data collectors and database administrators as well as administrative personnel, in total some 250 staff. To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan.

For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

The predictive medicine group is focused on development and application of predictive models for biomedical applications, with a particular interest in precision medicine and cancer research. Our research is based on large and high-dimensional datasets across multiple modalities, including molecular, clinical and medical imaging data.

Eligibility requirements for doctoral education

In order to participate in the selection for a doctoral position, you must meet the following general (A) and specific (B) eligibility requirements at latest by the application deadline.

A) General eligibility requirement
You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree) or
- have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
- have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Skills and personal qualities

- Have a degree in an area directly relevant for the position, including, for example, health informatics, biomedical engineering, epidemiology/public health, statistics or machine learning.

- Have previous documented experience and knowledge from analysis and modelling of histopathology image data using deep learning in a research environment.

- Have previous experience of programming and image analysis in Python and Tensorflow/Keras.

- Have prior experience in cancer research, and of research into aspects of quality control of histopathology images.

The applicant should be eager to learn new skills, willing to collaborate, be focused, dedicated, and enthusiastic about their research. Attention to detail and dedication to excellence are required.

Terms and conditions

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.

- Analytical skill
- Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to doctoral studies in the subject.
