Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre, Alnarp Doctoral student in forest resource management / forest restoration The centre carries out research, teaching and dissemination of information on forest management in southern Sweden. The research is focused on subjects particularly relevant in southern Sweden, such as the silviculture of deciduous and mixed forests. The department is located in Alnarp, near Malmö and Lund, and has approximately 35 employees. Please visit our homepage www.ess.slu.se.We are looking for a doctoral student to carry out research on the restoration of oak forests. Despite considerable efforts to increase biodiversity in Swedish conifer-dominated production forests, regeneration of broadleaved trees has not increased.Small stands of broadleaved forests, often consisting of large oak trees, are therefore especially valuable for biodiversity and other environmental aspects.Commonly there is a regeneration gap in these stands, resulting in a lack of oak seedlings and saplings. This restoration project will involve, amongst other things, planting oak seedlings in 16 forest sites and observing their response.Research is needed in order to understand the basic factors leading to successful establishment of small oaks. The result of this project will enable us to provide advice for oak forest restoration in southern Sweden. Requirements include an M.Sc.in Forestry, Biology or Ecology with an emphasis on forest resource management or nature conservation.Having a degree (minimum 180 ECTS) with similar emphasis is also acceptable.Experience in silviculture, forest restoration or nature conservation are considered a merit.
