Doctoral student in Environmental geochemistry
The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as zoonotic ecology.
Subject area for the project: Environmental geochemistry
Admission subject: The studies carried out in the project are designed to lead to a PhD in Environmental Science
Placement city: Kalmar, Sweden
Job description
The research project is in geochemistry. The topic is weathering of soils, with a focus on rare earth elements and associated Eu anomalies in weathered and unweathered soil horizons. The research will be carried out in collaboration with the research program of the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Co (SKB), and therefore the prime field site is the Forsmark area where the spent nuclear fuel will ultimately be deposited. The research will include field and laboratory work, modelling, and synthetization of secondary data found in the databases at SKB. The ultimate goal is to determine weathering rates and quantities based on rare earth element distribution and Eu anomalies in various minerals, grain-size fractions and soil horizons.
The position will be for four years. According to the Higher Education Ordinance, a person appointed to a doctoral studentship should primarily devote himself/herself to his/her own studies. In addition, an appointee may work to a limited extent with education, research, artistic development, and administration. However, before a doctoral degree has been awarded, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20% of a full-time post. This means that the position is for a maximum of five years, that is, four years of research and one year of other kind of work.
Requirements
A person fulfils the general entry requirements if he/she
• has been awarded a degree on second-cycle level
• completed the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which 60 credits on second-cycle level, or

Specific requirements also include
• knowledge in the fields of geochemistry, geology and mineralogy
• a high proficiency in written and spoken English
• have the ability to work independently as well as interact well in a research group.
Assessment grounds
• experience of field, laboratory and modeling work in geochemistry
• experience of work with trace elements, in particular the rare earth elements
• experience of working with soils and minerals
• personal suitability, on which we attach great importance
• knowledge of Swedish is not required, but an advantage as it helps in the contacts with people, documents and databases at SKB
