‘Cashless ecosystem’ is an interacting system comprising of certain sub-systems towards the transformation of traditional paper and coin-based currencies to the digitalization of the payment systems. Sweden was the first country in Europe to introduce banknotes almost 350 years back and now this country has been on the verge of becoming the world’s first cashless society. The innovative mobile applications help to reduce suspicious transaction of money, circulation of fake currency, combating money laundering to crackdown on organized crime or terror. However, despite such progress and potentials of the digitalization of payment systems and connecting the citizens into the complex ubiquitous environment, there are some critical issues, for research and for managerial practice, that are needed to be taken into investigation seriously for the more equitable as well as sustainable access towards a harmonious cashless society. For example, digital transformation challenges for those who are weak in handling or unfamiliar with digital services, undocumented immigrants, infringement of privacy and hacking etc. On the other hand, there is a lack of academic research that aims at understanding the contemporary practices of a cashless society with the goal of projecting its future trend. Therefore, the wider research question of this research project is – what are the characteristics, challenges and management of digital payment and its ecosystem system in a connected society and how do they shape up? During the research period, we will seek to investigate the major determinants of a cashless society, their characteristics, and impacts on the competitive business environment in particular and society in general.
