The School of Engineering is one of four schools within Jönköping University.

We offer attractive technical education at undergraduate and graduate levels and conduct advanced research in several technological areas. The School of Engineering is able to award doctorates in the area of industrial product realization. We collaborate with the surrounding society to develop new technology and spread knowledge to strengthen the competitiveness of companies. We have been awarded the accreditation "Engaged University" by the international organization ACEEU (Accreditation Council for Entrepreneurial and Engaged Universities) and in three categories received the highest rating "Excellent". The department of Product development, Production and Design conducts education and research in areas such as product development, production development and industrial design. The department is responsible for five educational programmes at Campus in Jönköping. In addition, the department is responsible for two education programmes in Nässjö and Värnamo. The department has a strong engagement in the development of research and education within Knowledge Intensive Product Realisation which is a strategic area at Jönköping University.

The department is looking for a doctoral student to join the research group Product Design and Development for the research project Leaner Tools. The doctoral student will be admitted to the graduate school Industrial Product Realisation in the subject of Machine Design.

 

Work assignments

You will belong to a research group in product design and development. Your first assignment will be in a research project involving the design and manufacturing of tooling for sheet metal forming finding how to design, manufacture and operate the tooling in a more efficient and sustainable way.

You will be reporting your studies in scientific articles and finally by writing a licentiate thesis. The work is carried out in close cooperation with industrial companies, so there will be ample opportunities for you to collaborate with specialists, such as tool makers and production engineers, at the companies and to conduct research work directly on site.

Listed below are some examples of research activities that you can be engage in:

- Smart tool concepts
- Increased knowledge content in process and tools
- Reuse of methods, solutions, and systems
- Use of new IT-solutions and AI for more efficient development work
- Application of new IT-solutions and process technology for more efficient manufacturing according to Industry 4.0
- The introduction of new manufacturing methods such as additive manufacturing (AM) for variant formation, better tool properties, efficient maintenance, and reuse of tool parts
- Industrialization of operation – from small scale to production. 

 

Besides research activities, you will be reading courses on PhD level, some of them in other Universities in Sweden and abroad. As a doctoral student you normally spend 80% of your time on research studies including third cycle courses. Other tasks, such as teaching, do not represent more than 20% of the working hours.

 

Qualifications

To be eligible for the position, you have a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Engineering Design, Product Development, or have achieved at least 240 credits/ECTS, of which a minimum of 60 credits/ECTS must have been achieved at second cycle level including an independent thesis work, or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad.

Due to the international working environment, a good level of the English language, both written and oral, is expected. The ability to speak and write in Swedish is meritorious, as the work is in close collaboration with Swedish companies.

The successful candidate is truly committed, creative and curious. You enjoy collaborations, are capable of actualizing visions and ideas into practically feasible working methods, tools, products, and solutions. Furthermore, you  have good communication skills, both orally and in written text. It is important that you have good analytical and systematical abilities.

It is important that you demonstrate skills to work efficiently, conscientiously, and professionally both independently and in a team environment with great responsibility and ability to identify and finish assignments/tasks in collaboration within the research teams consist of other research partners. Furthermore, you have a flexible work approach, are resilient to external stresses and can manage multiple work tasks simultaneously.

It would also be considered beneficial if you have:

- Theoretical knowledge in machine design, tool design and CAD
- Final project work or thesis work in relevant subject
- Teaching or lab-assistant work experience is meritorious
- Experience of collaboration in industrial networks
- Driver´s license for car - especially if it is valid in Sweden.
