The Department of Forest Economics pursues research and education in forest business administration, forest economics, natural resource economics and policy. The department is responsible for undergraduate education and graduate education in business administration and economics. The departments’ members are affiliated with Centre for Environment and Resource Economics (CERE) in Umeå. The editorial office of the Journal of Forest Economics as well as the main office of the Northern Regional office of the European Forest Institute (EFINORD) is located at the department.

Comparing institutions and innovation networks in promoting wooden multistory construction in Finland and Sweden (Innovationer och aktörssamverkan för flervåningsbyggande i Sverige och Finland)

Duties:
Circular bio-economy stands for an effective approach for the achievement of a sustainable development. It implies the sustainable use of resources to meet human needs, like food and housing. Wood-based materials can drive a sustainability transition because they are renewable, functional and climate neutral. This project aims to explore the role of business innovation and public private collaboration for a transition to sustainable wood based construction methods.

The Swedish University of Agricultural University and Helsinki University will perform a collaborative research project on institutional and market factors affecting the development of multi-story wood construction for residential use. The project explores how market development is influenced by new techniques and wooden products, and by collaboration and corporate models for multi-story wood construction. The empirical studies encompass both qualitative and quantitate approaches in comparative studies.

The part of the research project that concerns the doctoral student focuses on corporate roles in wood construction. The doctoral student combines both PhD-courses and practical research work, in addition to communication with various stakeholders.

Qualifications:
Students with a master’s degree in business administration are eligible to apply for this position. We are particularly looking for students with a master’s degree in forestry science, business administration with a minor in forestry, and a connection to sustainable development. The applicant has to have excellent command of both Swedish and English at start of the PhD position in order to do field work and communicate results. Much emphasis in the evaluation of applications is placed on analytical and problem solving capacity, motivation and ability to collaborate as well as work individually. Experiences of academic publication is seen as a merit.
