Mathematics – Quantum probability models of decision making, information access and retrieval
Job description: The project is supposed to concern applications of the mathematical formalism of quantum theory (especially, quantum probability and information) to model the process of decision making. This project will involve study of probabilistic, informational, cognitive and psychological aspects of general theory of decision making in the quantum-like framework by using, in particular, theory of open quantum systems and quantum instruments. The main aim is to proceed towards modeling of the decision making aspects of ranking in information access and retrieval. The work is also likely to involve performance of computer experiments and programming using mathematical software like SAGE, Mathematica or Matlab. This position is a part of the Innovative Training Network “Quantum Information Access and Retrieval Theory” based on MARIE Sklodowska-CURIE ACTION, see http://www.quartz-itn.eu/ .The position is located in Växjö, Sweden. However, the PhD-student will have a possibility to spend 1-2 months for training at other sites of the network as well as to participate in a variety of network’s training activities (workshops, courses, conferences). The total time of employment may not exceed 4 years full-time PhD-studies. The employment is supposed to start in October 2017 and the applicant is supposed to have been awarded a degree at advanced level in Mathematics or equivalent before October 1, 2017.
Entry requirements
A person fulfills the general entry requirements if he/she
•
Has been awarded a degree on second-cycle level
•
Has completed the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits (ECTS), of which 60 credits on second-cycle level, or
•
In other way, in Sweden or abroad, has acquired principally equivalent knowledge
•
Applicants shall be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.
•
Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host organization of QUARTZ (in this case Sweden) for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date.Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account
Specific prerequisites for admission to graduate studies in Mathematics are required. - a minimum of 120 higher education credits in the subject Mathematics or in subjects related to the doctoral level studies, or equivalent knowledge acquired in some other manner either in Sweden or abroad, of which an individual work of at least 15, and
•
a good command of Swedish and/or English
Assessment criteria
The selection of the candidate will be based upon on courses completed, quality of thesis (and relevant papers written). Theses containing elements of original research, and research papers are considered meritorious.
Since the PhD-project will include the use of the mathematical apparatus of quantum theory, the preference will be given to candidates trained in quantum probability and information (good knowledge about their classical counterparts is also important) and having interest in the mathematical foundations of quantum physics. Theory of decision making takes into account psychological and cognitive factors. Therefore applicant’s interest in mathematical modeling in psychology and cognition will be appreciated. The concrete application of decision making modeling is oriented to information access and retrieval. Therefore interest (and may be even education) in computer science can play the important role.
