The School of Engineering (JTH) is one of four schools within Jönköping University.
We offer attractive technical education at undergraduate and graduate levels and conduct advanced research in several technological areas. The School of Engineering is able to award doctorates in the area of industrial product realization. We collaborate with the surrounding society to develop new technology and spread knowledge to strengthen the competitiveness of companies. The department of Industrial product development, production and design conducts education and research in areas such as product development, production development and industrial design. The department is responsible for four educational programmes at Campus in Jönköping. In addition, the department is responsible for two education programmes in Nässjö and Värnamo. The department has a strong engagement in the development of research and education within Knowledge Intensive Product Realisation which is a strategic area at Jönköping University.
The department of Industrial Product development, Production and Design is looking for a PhD student in the subjects of Production system, Automation, Robotics, Flexibility in Production and Assembly, for research project “SABACE”. The PhD student will participate in the strategic development of the production research at the department in close collaboration with the regional industry aiming for international competitiveness.
Work assignments
Your work will mainly include studying, analyzing, and developing an industrial framework for development of safe and sustainable automated assembly cells that contribute to increasing productivity and performance in a mixed-model assembly system. You will also take part in research studies such as product realization, production development, and automation.
Furthermore, strategic development of research within the Production Group is to contribute to a continuous analysis and advocation of industrial automation by directing research towards key areas such as flexibility, sustainability, and integration of product design and automation solutions e.g., design of interfaces between production equipment and products.
Besides this, the work would also include working with companies in the region and engaging them in department activities. Other tasks, such as teaching, do not represent more than 20% of the total working hours.
Qualifications
To be eligible for the position, you have a Master’s degree or have achieved at least 240 credits/ECTS, of which a minimum of 60 credits/ECTS must have been achieved at second cycle level, or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad.
Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Engineering with focus on Production Systems, Automation, Robotics, Assembly Systems, Flexibility in Production, and Product Customization is a requirement.
Master thesis work or final project work in Industrial Production, Automation/Robotics is expected.
Jönköping University has a clear international character, which also requires good written and communicative ability in English. Due to the collaboration with regional industry, a good level of the Swedish language, both written and oral, is expected.

Information
We offer a fully financed full-time position which is limited in accordance with the applicable collective agreement for doctoral students. The start date of the employment is 1st of January 2023 or by agreement.
The employment as a doctoral student normally covers five years, of which four years (80%) consist of full-time doctoral studies. The employment is extended annually based on the individual study plan. The salary is regulated according to a special doctoral student ladder. Annual working time for teachers according to the university's collective agreement.
