Doctoral students in educational sciences (higher professional education)

Arbetsbeskrivning

The University of Borås is home to the Faculty of Librarianship, Information, Education and IT, which provides education and conducts research in Library and Information Science, Pedagogical Work, and Business and IT.

The faculty has now announced two doctoral studentships in educational science specialising in the higher professional education (engineering, teacher training, nursing, etc.). The studentships will be linked to a newly started national graduate school: Studies on Professional Education and Training for Society (SPETS).

Job description

The SPETS graduate school is intended to develop scientific knowledge about the Swedish higher education’s professional educations and training, where both educations for a vocational degree (e.g., engineering and teacher training) and for an artistic degree are important. Doctoral studies and the University’s education science professions and programmes are also of interest for research and development. Depending on current knowledge needs within these profession-oriented programmes, the doctoral students’ research projects can be about learning, teaching, social conditions, organisational processes, professional development, political conditions, policy implementation etc.

SPETS is run in collaboration with the Department of Educational Sciences at Lund University, the Department of Communication and Learning of Science at Chalmers University of Technology, and the Department of Educational Work (IPA) at the University of Borås. This gives doctoral students access to several nationally and internationally active research environments. The doctoral students’ physical workplace is at the University of Borås, Department of Educational Work (IPA), where the research group Higher Education, Practice and Politics (HUPP) will be the natural base.

The graduate school, which is run according to Lund’s general study plan for postgraduate education in educational science, is based on joint courses and seminars with physical meetings that alternate among participating universities.

The doctoral studentships devote at least 80% of time to doctoral studies and thesis work. The remaining time is reserved for departmental service at the Faculty of Librarianship, Information, Education and IT, including teaching at the undergraduate and master’s levels in relevant courses, supervision of degree projects, and participation in external projects and/or administration.

Qualifications

Individuals meet the general entrance requirements for doctoral courses and programmes if they:

• have been awarded a master’s degree;
• have completed studies comprising at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are awarded in from the master’s level, or
• have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

The higher education institution may permit an exemption from the general entry requirements for an individual applicant if there are special grounds.

The special eligibility requirements are at least 60 credits in the subject area for the doctoral studies, of which at least 30 credits are for an advanced study project.
