At the Faculty of Textiles, Engineering and Business, research and education are conducted in business administration, industrial engineering and management, resource recovery, building technology, and within the textile field: design, management and technology.

The Faculty has five departments: the Department of Business Administration and Textile Management, the Department of Engineering, the Department of Resource Recovery and Building Technology, the Department of Textile Technology, and the Department of Design. The Swedish School of Textiles, as well as the two centres, the Centre for Sustainable Society Development and the Swedish Institute for Innovative Retailing/The Retail Lab, are other important elements within the Faculty. At the Faculty, there are also two research schools, in Resource Recovery and Textile and Fashion.

Sense Tech (sense technology) is a new field that deals with the strengthening, replacement, and expansion of human sensory ability in or in immediate connection with the human body. The area is closely related to assistive technology and, partly, welfare technology. We are now seeking a doctoral student for this area and are looking for a driven person who can help shape this field from a textile perspective. The focus is on developing physiologically effective textiles through electrical stimulation with an emphasis on, but not limited to, the cutaneous and kinaesthetic senses.

The doctoral student will be part of the research group Polymer E-textiles with Associate Professor Nils-Krister Persson as supervisor and Dr Li Guo as assistant supervisor. This doctoral studentship employment will be with the Department of Textile Technology with Niina Hernandez as immediate manager.

Job description

The position includes the following:


• Own doctoral education
• Define and map the possibilities for textiles’ impact on receptors for perception
• Define and map the possibilities for textiles’ impact on motor points distributed throughout the body
• Manufacture, using textile techniques, of electrodes for stimulation
• Carry out scientific studies regarding textile electrical stimulation
• Study the area of user experience with special regard to textile aspects
• Conduct studies regarding user experience (UX)
• Scientific reporting and presentation

The doctoral studentship position will devote at least 80% of time to doctoral studies and thesis work. Any remaining time is for departmental duties consisting of teaching at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level in relevant courses, supervision of degree projects, participation in external projects, and other assignments and/or administration.

Doctoral students are employed according to the regulations outlined in Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance. The study period corresponds to a maximum of four years of full-time study. The first employment period covers one year and is normally renewed by one year at a time. If departmental duties are included, the doctoral education period is extended by an equal degree, however with a maximum of five years.
