Arbetsbeskrivning

Information about the research/the project/the division
The Division of Data Science and AI division at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg and the Division of Systems and Control at the Department of Electrical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology invite applications for one (1) year postdoctoral position (full time temporary employment) starting asap but no later than January 1, 2021. The successful candidate will be offered a one-year employment at the Department of Electrical Engineering. The project is jointly founded by CHAIR (Chalmers AI Research) and Chalmers Transport Area of Advance.

This project is concerned with real-time and online learning in electric vehicles, focusing on modeling the energy consumption in realistic traffic conditions, e.g. taking into account the impact of weather, wind, temperature, logistics mission, etc. Due to the limited battery capacity, energy consumption is very important for electric vehicles. Hence, planning and designing energy-aware navigation tools plays a critical in this area. To achieve this, a key step is to model and learn the energy consumption in different conditions. In particular, we consider the following main challenges. i) Data and Hypotheses. To formulate the problem mathematically, explore the relevant vehicle parameters and features, and specify the hypotheses and the data limits. We may design efficient online/reinforcement learning exploration methods for this purpose. ii) Method. This problem requires online learning and optimization methods, adaptive to the changes in the environment and robust to noise and outliers. iii) Performance and Validation. This component deals with validation and correctness of the system, from both the perspective of learning and control theory. iv) Application. We will investigate the energy consumption model in practice under realistic conditions.

Department of Computer Science and Engineering is responsible for research and education at the various related areas such as  Data Scince and AI, Software Engineering, Hardware Engineerin, Parallel and Distributed Computing, High-Performance Computing, Theoretical Computer Sciense, Formal Methods and Verification, Security and Network Systems. In particular, the Data Science and AI Division is dedicated to world-class research and education in the wide areas of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Data Sciece. The focus is on fundamentals as well as applications in different domains such as transportation, life science, health, and NLP.

Major responsibilities
You are expected to pursue a vigorous research program and collaborate with our researchers.

During the employment we offer you the possibility that up to 20 % of your work may be spent on teaching, supervision. The appointment offers great opportunities to qualify for further research positions within academia or industry as we have numerous ongoing collaborations with the internationally leading groups. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of one year.

Qualifications
You should have a Ph.D. in Computer Science/Engineering, Transportation, Control, Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics, Physics, Electrical Engineering or equivalent.

Your educational background should (partially) cover some courses on machine learning, probabilistic and statistical methods, adaptive and robust control, mathematical modeling of traffic/transportation systems, online/reinforcement learning and random finite set theory. Ability to initiate new research collaborations is essential. Good communication skills in oral and written English are required. Excellent presentation skills, and fluency in English are required. Previous experiences in research, publications, and teaching are very important.
