The Department of Built Environment and Energy Technology, Linnaeus University,is searching for applicants for a 4-year full-time PhD position. According to the Higher Education Ordinance a person appointed to a doctoral studentship should primarily devote himself/herself to his/her own studies. An appointee may, however, work to a limited extent with education, research, artistic development, and administration. However, before a doctoral degree has been awarded, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20% of a full-time post. The total employment period may, however, not exceed the time corresponding to full-time third-cycle study for four years.

Job description
The background to the project is that about 80% of the Swedish detached houses are more than 30 years old, majority of them have poor energy standard and they need some kind of renovation. However, energy renovation of detached houses is rather slow due to several barriers. The overall goal of this project is to develop business model(s) for holistic energy renovation of detached houses, especially in sub-urban or rural areas. The model(s) will be developed by a consortium consisting of Linnaeus University, companies and public agencies in Småland and Blekinge region, and international researchers. The model will be tested through actual renovation of selected houses in Småland and Blekinge region.

The research education of the doctoral candidate includes the following:


• Conduct survey of homeowners, renovation related companies, and banks in Småland and Blekinge.
• Organize meetings and workshops to discuss business model development.
• Document and analyze the renovation process regarding the business model.
• Conduct economic and environmental (carbon dioxide emission and primary energy use) assessment of the renovations.

Requirements
A person fulfils the general entry requirements if he/she has


• a completed degree at Master’s (second-cycle) level
• at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 are at Master’s level, or
• generally equivalent knowledge acquired by other means, inside or outside Sweden.

Specific requirements 
Specific prerequisites for admission to graduate studies in Building Technology are required.


• a minimum of 90 higher education credits in the subject Building Technology or in subjects related to the doctoral level studies, or equivalent knowledge acquired in some other manner either in Sweden or abroad, and
• a good command of Swedish and/or English.

Assessment grounds
Other assessment criteria are


• academic merits and outcome of the interview process,
• scientific publications in the research area,
• working experience relevant for the research studies,
• ability to work independently as well as in cooperation with others,
• interest in participating in teaching and other activities at the department.

The selection of candidates is made with regard to the applicant’s ability to successfully complete and benefit from their studies at the graduate level.
