Umeå University - with its 29,000 students and over 4,000 employees - is an organisation in constant change and development. The university's researchers carry out excellence within several areas of research, and many of them are among the world's elite. We are one of Sweden's largest providers of education and offer a broad and attractive range of courses and programmes. Our campus constitutes an inspiring environment for everyone that studies and works here.We wish to co-operate with companies and organisations throughout the Umeå region and all over the world. PhD-position in Environmental Analytical Chemistry The Chemistry Department at Umeå University today has approximately 170 members and offers a stimulating environment with a commitment to excellence in both teaching and research and provides a valuable service to society. The department offers degrees at B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. levels and our graduate- and postgraduate students are attractive for employment in both academic institutions and industry. Studies of the fate of organic pollutants in the environment are currently hampered by costly and time consuming chemical analyses. This project aims at developing a conceptually new methodology for simultaneous extraction and purification of environmental pollutants in soil, sediment and tissue samples. The methodology combines pressurized liquid extraction with selective adsorbents that remove interfering compounds and fractionate the pollutants according to chemical class. The goal is to produce extracts clean enough for direct target quantification by gas or liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry.Towards the end of the project the methodology will be applied to a problem that is selected together with the candidate. We are seeking you with a sound documented knowledge in analytical chemistry (15 ECTS minimum). If you also have a good knowledge in environmental chemistry or experience of one or more of the instrumental techniques in question that is considered an additional qualification. The requitment procedure is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen chapters 5 and 7).In addition, the candidate should have at least 90 ECTS in chemistry (or equivalent).
