The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as zoonotic ecology.

With special emphasis in Systems Biology of Acidophile Biofilm Production.

Project title: Systems biology of acidophil biofilms for efficient metal extraction

The research project: This position is within a collaborative ERASysAPP project to model how microbial biofilms attach and form a biofilm on sulphide mineral surfaces. The project has the goal to optimize metal dissolution during biomining.

Applicants should have a minimum of a good undergraduate degree although candidates with a Master Degree (240hp/240ECTS) or corresponding experience would be at an advantage. Documented evidence of research in systems biology, acidophile microbiology, biomining, or biofilm formation would also be an advantage. Basic requirements for post-graduate studies are laid out in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen), Chapter 7.

The PhD studies are limited to 4 years (100%) but may be extended to 5 years through teaching at the undergraduate level. The starting date for the PhD education will be in autumn 2014. The position is located in Kalmar.
