PhD Projects at Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology
Anti-obesity effects of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and IL-1 in the brain
Application deadline: 2010-12-08
Description of the research project
The successful applicant will work in the research group that was first to show that the immune regulating signal substances interleukin-6 (IL-6) and IL-1 prevent obesity and enhances glucose balance in a way that may prevent the development of diabetes. Before this, IL-6 and IL-1 were largely thought to be merely regulators of immune function and prevent infections. We believe that IL-1 and-6 prevent obesity by acting on the hypothalamus, a part of the CNS, and the aim of the thesis is to investigate the underlying mechanisms. These studies are very timely, as there is at present a large academic and industrial interest in the possibility to treat and prevent obesity and metabolic disease at the level of the hypothalamus.
The student will be part of an excellent scientific environment with solid knowledge about both neuroscience and metabolic diseases.He/she will have an opportunity to learn and work with animal models such as gene knockout mice, and mice with silenced gene function after treatment with hairpin siRNA.Moreover, he/she will learn immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, confocal microscopy, and medium throughput microarray.
Desired background
It is desirable that the candidate has a background in medicine, physiology, pharmacology, neuroscience or molecular biology.
