Stroke - to which extent can it be prevented?

Application deadline: 2010-04-20

Description of the research project
Stroke is a major cause of death and disability in the world but causes and prevention of stroke have received much less attention than coronary heart disease. The major research question for the proposed doctoral project is which factors determine the incidence, prevalence and mortality for stroke in the population and in the individual. The project aims to provide a comprehensive education in research methods and scientific writing within the field of cardiovascular epidemiology.Several study cohorts and study designs will be used, such as prospective studies of a large Gothenburg population cohort, register studies using large national databases and a modelling study of the importance of various factors in the incidence of stroke in the population (IMPACT model). The latter part of the project is an international collaboration with the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom.
Specific research aims
1.Which is the cumulative risk for stroke in a population which has been followed for 35 years, with consideration of'competing risk' and the population attributable risk for various risk factors?
2.Sex-and age-specific changes in incidence, prevalence, mortality and case-fatality for stroke in Sweden 1987-2006.
3.Which factors explain the 30% decrease in stroke incidence occurring in Sweden since the mid-90s - Swedish stroke IMPACT model
4.The development of simulation models in IMPACT to investigate to which extent modification of treatment and life style changes can influence the incidence of stroke.
Excellent registers and the potential of the unique Swedish personal identifiers which can be used to track patients and cohorts for extended periods of time provide very good research opportunities.
