Healthy growth.Lifestyle and societal factors related to normal weight and excess gain of weight or waist in children
Application deadline: 2010-04-20
Description of the research project
The Healthy Growth Project is the first study on overweight and obesity in school children that includes a nationally representative sample of children and uses standardised methods for measurements and classification of overweight and obesity. The study that is the basis for this doctoral research project is based on the Swedish arm of The WHO European Childhood Obesity Initiative in which 14 European countries cooperate.
The objective of this doctoral project is to study how BMI and waist circumference can be related to lifestyle and socio-economic conditions based on where the children live.Further, the goal is a deeper understanding of how food habits, physical activity and inactivity differ between children in different types of municipalities and how this can be related to risk of being overweight, obese and underweight. Finally, the project includes a mapping of parent's knowledge, understanding and practice concerning dietary and lifestyle habits for healthy growth. The project will give the doctoral student an opportunity to develop analytic skills in epidemiology, with focus on societal and lifestyle factors and obesity, but also skills in qualitative methodology and a mixed methods design.
Desired background
It is desirable that the candidate has background in the health sciences or food science and some experience in nutrition, epidemiology or paediatrics.Due to the field work excellent skills in Swedish are required.
