The obesity epidemic and lifestyles in teenagers
Application deadline: 2010-04-20
Description of the research project
The working title of this project is "The obesity EPIdemic and LIFEstyles in TEENagerS: EPILIFE-TEENS", a study based primarily on data collected in the birth cohort of 1990 in Gothenburg, Sweden. The rationale of this project is that the study population represents the first generation of children who were part of the documented childhood obesity epidemic and they are therefore a particularly interesting cohort to study in terms of weight history and health as they enter adulthood. This study has detailed information on these children's growth from 0-18 years and their current lifestyles and psychosocial health status. The research objectives of this thesis include: description of the natural history of childhood obesity in the 1990 birth cohort, testing the validity of international criteria for defining childhood obesity, and comparison of the growth curves of the 1990 versus an earlier birth cohort.Other work will deal with the impact of the obesity epidemic on quality of life and psychosocial health among girls and boys entering adulthood and socioeconomic inequalities in obesity.
This project will provide an opportunity for a doctoral student to develop analytic skills in epidemiology, with focus on obesity, growth from infancy to adulthood, and psychosocial aspects of weight status with focus on gender.
Desired background
It is desirable that the candidate has background in the health sciences or biology, and some experience in epidemiology, nutrition or psychology.
