PhD-position in Fluid Mechanics, Visualisation of multiphase-flow with whole field techniques, Ref no 1410-07
The Division of Fluid Mechanics (www.ltu.se/tfm/fluidmechanics) being part of the Department of Applied Physics and Mechanical Engineering at Luleå University of Technology has three positions open for new PhD students. The students will work in an exciting and growing environment using the latest techniques within the area of fluid mechanics and with the possibility to develop contacts world-wide within as well industry as academy.
Visualisation of multiphase-flow with whole field techniques:
Experimental techniques such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) have evolved enabling instant visualisations of velocity fields of transient flows. In addition, the quality and trust of Computational Fluid Dynamics is rapidly increasing facilitating a direct comparison to experiments and a possibility to do visualisations outside the range of experimental set-ups.These powerful tools are by all means becoming increasingly important in fluid flow research in general and when dealing with complex systems such as multiphase flows, in particular. The Division of Fluid Mechanics has several projects within this area related to fish migration, inner erosion in embankment dams, composites manufacturing and the flow of grease, for instance.
Project description: Focus will be set on usage of experimental whole field techniques to visualise multi-phase flows while area of application may vary.Overall research quest is related to the possibilities and limitations of the technique in practical situations while specific goals are set for each project. The PhD-student will work in close co-operation to other students doing CFD-simulations and/or theoretical analysis on the problems of interest. To start with, fish migration related problem will be solved in-connection to elforsk programme "Vattenkraft - Miljöeffekter, åtgärder och kostnader i nu reglerade vatten !".
Qualifications: Masters/Civ.ing.in Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering or similar.Knowledge about PIV and fish migration is a merit.
