PhD-position in Fluid Mechanics, CFD-based inverse modelling of composites manufacturing , Ref no 1408-07
The Division of Fluid Mechanics (www.ltu.se/tfm/fluidmechanics) being part of the Department of Applied Physics and Mechanical Engineering at Luleå University of Technology has three positions open for new PhD students. The students will work in an exciting and growing environment using the latest techniques within the area of fluid mechanics and with the possibility to develop contacts world-wide within as well industry as academy.

CFD-based inverse modelling of composites manufacturing : In a research project led by Scania focus is set on the quality of composite parts made from Sheet Moulding Compound. In this process, being of highest importance for European automobile industry, a mixture of a resin, chopped fibres and fill-materials such as chalk is compressed between heated tools.A multifaceted flow pattern is developed as experimentally visualised in former projects with a high risk of air inclusions that reduce the quality of the part.Overall research targets are improved compression moulding, new surface defect detection equipment and new painting systems which should lead to lowered void content, improved surface quality, reduced scrap and hence reduced cost. The project involves renowned industries including ABB High Voltage Products, Becker Industrial Coatings, Polytec Composites, Reichhold, Saab Automobile, and Volvo Cars.

Project description: The work will comprise Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) of compression moulding of Sheet Moulding Compound and experimental work in co-operation with SICOMP AB.The simulations will be performed with a free liquid surface, a moving boundary and heat transfer between the mould and the material.A surrogate based inverse modelling procedure will be applied in order to derive the viscous response of the compound.

Qualifications: Masters/Civ.ing.in Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering or similar.Knowledge about CFD is a merit.Since male students are traditionally more numerous in this field of studies, female candidates are especially encouraged to apply.Knowledge about the Swedish and English language is important.
