Sahlgrenska akademin utlyser doktorandplatser med placering vid institutionen för biomedicin, institutionen för medicin och institutionen för neurovetenskap och fysiologi.

Doktorandplatserna avser två års utbildningsbidrag och två års doktorandanställning, alternativt fyra års doktorandanställning, och beräknas leda fram till doktorsexamen.

Microbial regulation of novel hormones in the gut and their potential implication on host physiology

Description of the research project
Throughout life the adult human intestine contains 10-100 trillion microorganisms (i.e.the gut microbiota).Unlike foreign infectious microorganisms, these bacteria have evolved extraordinary capabilities that are vital to human health e.g.the production of vitamins and xenometabolism.However, not all microbial functions are beneficial.We recently demonstrated that the gut microbiota can be considered an environmental factor that causes obesity and insulin resistance.We have recently performed an extensive profiling of the transcriptional responses in the guts from germ-free and conventionally raised mice and found that several novel hormones are regulated by the gut microbiota.This project will determine the cellular origin of these novel hormones, the underlying mechanism for their regulation, and by using genetically manipulated mice determine the physiologic function.

Desired background
Previous training in working with mice and molecular techniques is advantageous.
