Company Description:
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Job Description/Introduction:
Join a great team pushing the limits of superconducting accelerator magnets, to shape the future of CERN largest accelerator. CERN, take part!
You will join the Superconducting Magnet Technology (SMT) Section, part of the Magnets, Superconductors and Cryostats (MSC) Group within the Technology (TE) Department. The Section has as main mandate the design and fabrication of innovative superconducting short prototype magnets for ongoing LHC upgrades and future accelerators along with the development of associated technology and engineering processes. SMT is also responsible for the superconducting magnet insulation development and provides CERN-wide support for polymer casting and rapid prototyping.
Functions:
As an Electrical Engineer, you will be in charge of the development of novel technical solutions for the electrical insulation manufacturing and testing of future superconducting magnets.
You will:
- Develop electrical insulation systems for superconducting coils and systems. Capture users' needs and requirements.
- Develop and perform specialised composite and polymer material testing, including high voltage tests and ensuring safety.
- Participate to the magnet fabrication: from coil construction to magnet assembly and quality control.
- Take in charge the technical management of one or more external collaborations in the portfolio of the SMT section related to high voltage engineering and insulation systems.
Qualifications:
Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electrical engineering, material engineering or a related field.
Experience: The experience required for this post is:
- Experience in performing and analysing advanced mechanical and electrical measurements, including high voltage measurements.
- Field experience in the construction and repair of electrical insulation of electrical machines.
- Initial experience in superconducting machines construction, operation, and maintenance.
- Experience in the use of finite element codes for electromagnetic or electrostatic applications is an asset.
Technical competencies:
- Knowledge and application of mechanical testing (destructive): mechanical testing and electrical testing.
- Knowledge and application of polymers: and composite.
- Knowledge of electrical machine technology.
- Construction, test and installation of electrical machines: electrical equipment and systems.
Behavioural competencies:
- Working in Teams: contributing to promoting a positive atmosphere in the team through an optimistic and constructive attitude; addressing issues.
- Demonstrating Accountability: taking responsibility for own actions and decisions.
- Demonstrating Flexibility: demonstrating a willingness to accept changing circumstances; supporting initiatives for change.
- Solving Problems: seeking and integrating other points of view when tackling an issue; consulting experts in the field and undertaking benchmarking.
Language skills:
Spoken and written English: ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages.
