Electrical Motor Design Engineer - Electromobility


Volvo Group Trucks Technology – Electromobility is the global, strategic center for Electromobility development within the Volvo Group directly reporting to EVP of GTT. By 2040 entire sales of Volvo Group vehicle shall be fossil free and already by 2030 the annual sale of Electric Trucks will be 100 000. Electromobility is key area for the Volvo Group to be in the forefront of environmentally friendly transport solutions for a more sustainable tomorrow.
From 2019 we are located in Volvo’s new center for new Technologies; CampX. Here the Battery Electrical Vehicle stream is co-located and includes also Fuel cells joint venture with Daimler as well as the Autonomous drive development – an inspiring environment!


Role description:
In the role as Electrical Motor Design Engineer, you will work on design of one or several Electrical Motors (EM:s) for traction and/or for PTO (Power Take-Off) applications.
You will work both with EM:s currently in development with our suppliers but also with new designs for the future. You will be part of the openminded and supportive team and closely collaborate with team members in finding best solutions for our EM designs.
We see that you help EM test team to define test methods and use test data to improve the models for performance as well as for lifetime simulations. Analyze and use available test data from test lab and vehicle field data to build and improve the EM simulation models. Collaborate with other simulation and component teams within Electromobility to support and implement the EM models into system simulations.
You will support the team when working with our suppliers, managing the work distribution and making sure the suppliers understand the technical requirements here at Volvo as well as understanding the needs of our customers and application.
We also see that you take lead in secure cross-functional and business anchoring as well as lead other engineer within the area when needed.
Other tasks that are included in the role:
Actively work with the agile teams in JIRA backlog during the Program Increment
Identify and drive quality improvements and cost reduction activities
Development of component TR and secure RTS work with supplier

Prioritized experience and competence
Electromagnetic design simulation and optimization
Lifetime simulations and models
Drive cycle analysis
Tools: MotorCAD, Ansys Maxwell, Phyton, Matlab
Insulation material selection
BOM list and suppliers
Background within Electric drivelines HW development
Experience in development of electrical motor drive systems
Development together with system suppliers
Relevant engineering education
Good communication skills in English, both spoken and written

Relevant experience
Electrical vehicle development
400VAC installations
Volvo systems and process
