The HVDC technology has been on the market for the past 60 years and is used, among other things, to transmit power over long distances with minimal losses, using overhead lines, underground and submarine cable systems.
The electrical valve design department is a part of ABB HVDC Products in Ludvika and it is globally responsible for electrical design and requirements of valves for HVDC and SVC valves. HVDC valves are used to convert AC to DC, and vice versa, and are the heart of HVDC power transmissions. SVC valves are used in SVC systems, in order to support and stabilize AC systems. The electrical design department has 12 employees and works in close collaboration with our offices in India and China. The department not only works with tenders and project deliveries but we also work with productification of new valve solutions, life cycle management and provide technical support in upgrades & service projects.

Your responsibilities
As Electrical Valve Design Engineer you will work with power electronics in high power transmission applications, Power Grids’ HVDC.
You will perform semiconductor valve calculations and simulations in order to find out voltage stresses and losses in the semiconductors and valve electronics.
You will also be responsible for specifying control and protection requirements on the valve.
The theoretic calculations will be combined with high power testing in our test laboratories, it will be your task to specify the testing requirements and ensure that it is performed in accordance with valid standards and customer specifications.

Your background
You hold a Bachelor of Science, or preferably a Master of Science, in Power Engineering, Engineering Physics or equivalent.
Previous work experience is preferable, but not a demand.
You have knowledge and skills in MATLAB, Mathcad or PSCAD.
Fluency in English is required, whereas Swedish are highly valued.
It will be a part of your job during projects, tenders and development to communicate with other departments, team members, projects leaders, suppliers and customers.
It’s important that you are open-minded and straightforward in your communication.
You are a natural problem solver, who enjoys new challenges.
