Electronics / Electrical Technical Engineer

Arbetsbeskrivning

Company Description
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Job Description
Introduction

Join a great team pushing the limits of accelerator-magnet test and measurement, to shape the future of CERN large accelerators. Take part!

You will join:

The Test and Measurements Section (TM) of the Magnet, Superconductors and Cryostat Group (MSC), as part of the Technology Department (TE), in charge of the qualification of magnetic materials, testing of devices, and magnetic measurements of normal and superconducting magnets. The TE-MSC group has the mandate to design, construct, and test superconducting as well as normal conducting magnets, and to integrate them in the CERN accelerator complex.

The mandate of the TM section includes acceptance test and characterization of the magnetic field of new and existing devices, along with electrical and power tests of superconducting magnets. This work is carried out by an interdisciplinary team of engineers/physicists, technicians, and students working in collaboration with magnet designers and beam physicists. To make these tests possible, and to achieve the accuracy level required to control particle beams, we develop and maintain highly specialised, world-class test facilities, electronic instrumentation and magnetic sensors. In addition, the section is responsible for the development and maintenance of real-time measurement systems that provide crucial feedback to various accelerator control systems.

Functions

As an Electronics or Electrical Technical Engineer in the TM section, you will take an active part in the work related to the power test and magnetic measurements of normal and superconducting magnets, including:

- Operation of the superconducting magnet test station and related data acquisition systems (such as those dedicated to precision voltage-signal acquisition, insulation tests, magnetic measurements, etc.).
- Specification, development and maintenance of hardware components of test systems and instrumentation, such as signal and power cabling networks and PLC-based or custom safety interlock systems.
- Specify and follow up the development of software for data acquisition and powering systems used for magnet tests.
- Producing quality assurance documents for the magnet test benches, specifically for electronics and data acquisition equipment.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electrical or electronics engineering or a related field.

Experience:

- Proven experience in the development, specification, and implementation of large or complex electrical or electronic systems.
- Proven experience in the operation of a complex technical installation in an industrial environment or a laboratory.
- Experience in preparing procedures or technical and quality assurance documentation of electrical or electronic systems.

Technical competencies:

- Installation, operation and maintenance of industrial data-acquisition, monitoring and control systems.
- Operation and maintenance of electromechanical equipment and systems.
- Operation and maintenance of electrical circuits and networks.
- Operation and maintenance of superconducting magnet systems.
- Knowledge and application of instrumentation and measurement techniques.

Behavioural competencies:

- Working in teams: contributing to promoting a positive atmosphere in the team through an optimistic and constructive attitude; addressing issues. Cooperating constructively with others in the pursuit of team goals; balancing personal goals with team goals.
- Demonstrating flexibility: demonstrating a willingness to accept changing circumstances; supporting initiatives for change. Readily absorbing new techniques and working practices; proposing new or improved ways of working.
- Solving problems: seeking and integrating other points of view when tackling an issue; consulting experts in the field and undertaking benchmarking.
- Building relationships: understanding how individual differences bring added value to the Organization; promoting complementarities. Showing a sincere interest in the concerns and perspectives of others.
- Demonstrating accountability: using openness and honesty to interact constructively with others. Presenting information accurately and objectively. Standing up for own opinion and actions with well substantiated arguments.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts.
