Company Description
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Job Description
Introduction
Are you an energetic and service-oriented engineer experienced in electronics, willing to contribute to the success of CERN's High Energy Physics experiments? We are seeking to consolidate the team of engineers providing technical support and consultancy to the users of our unique set of radiation-tolerant link systems. Join our crew and become a key expert for the high energy physics community around the world. CERN, take part!
Functions
You will join the Electronic Systems for Experiments Group (ESE) of the Experimental Physics Department (EP), which designs, implements and tests electronic systems (including radiation-tolerant ASICs and opto-electronic devices), for the experiments at CERN and also provides a series of related services. The Back-End section (BE) develops optical links and modular electronics for the readout and control of the CERN experiments. You will provide the front-line user support for these ESE projects (Versatile Link and Versatile Link Plus, GBTx and lpGBT) and their ecosystems.
As a field application electronics engineer in the Back-End section of the ESE group, you will:
-Provide expert consultancy and technical support for the many users of the radiation hard optical link components in the LHC experiment and machine communities. This will cover all components of the links, from ASICs to opto-electronic devices.
-Design, produce and distribute reference boards implementing these components.
-Perform complex tests and characterization campaigns on these devices and systems.
-Participate in reviews of user designs implementing these devices.
-Implement test systems involving high-end equipment.
Qualifications
Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electronics engineering or a related field.
Experience:
The experience required for this post is:
-Extensive experience in user support with a service-oriented approach.
-Demonstrated experience in the management of users forums, collaboration platforms, and documentation tools (Discourse, Jira, GitLab.).
-Demonstrated knowledge of the implementation, characterization, and operation of high speed (optical) serial links.
-Demonstrated experience with software scripting languages for hardware and instrument control and for measurement analysis (e.g. Python, tcl).
-Demonstrated experience of relevant laboratory instrumentation (e.g. high speed oscilloscopes, power supplies, climatic chambers, optical attenuators...).
-Demonstrated experience in the design and layout of PCBs including BGAs and high-speed transmission links.
Technical competencies:
-Knowledge and application of instrumentation and measurement techniques.
-Programming/Software development (Python, tcl, Openshift, Gitlab).
-Design, layout and production of electronic circuit boards.
-Testing and measurement of optoelectronic systems.
-Knowledge and application of quality and reliability assurance techniques in electronics.
-Knowledge and application of signal integrity techniques.
-Design of electronics based on field programmable logic-based devices (FPGA).
Behavioural competencies:
-Learning and sharing knowledge: sharing knowledge and expertise freely and willingly with others; coaching others to ensure knowledge transfer.
-Learning from own successes and failures; being receptive to others' ideas and building on them.
