Electronics Engineer

Arbetsbeskrivning

Company Description
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Job Description
Introduction

Are you an electronics engineer with experience of designing modules which integrate ASICs, FPGAs, opto-electronics and power management? We are seeking to strengthen our contributions to the readout systems of CERN's physics experiments, in particular the front-end electronics mounted in the harsh environments of the particle detectors. This will involve designing, producing, testing, and integrating electronics modules as part of the international teams constructing the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider. Take part!

Functions

You will join the Electronic Systems for Experiments Group (ESE) of the Experimental Physics Department (EP), which designs electronic systems for the experiments at CERN and provides electronics-related services. The Front-End (FE) section designs and integrates on-detector systems with specific constraints imposed by the high density of components and the harsh operational environment. These systems incorporate signal processing, data transmission and power distribution.

As an electronics engineer in the Front-End section of the ESE group, you will:

-Design and test electronics modules for front-end systems.
-Design, produce, commission and support systems for laboratory and production testing of the modules.
-Design, produce, commission and support the infrastructure for system integration of the modules in CERN's experiments, working together with detector physicists and mechanical engineers from multiple institutes in the ATLAS and CMS collaborations.
-Provide technical support for production and quality-assurance programmes in liaison with collaborating institutes and commercial contractors.

Qualifications
Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of engineering or a related field.

Experience:

The experience required for this post is:

-Design (schematic and layout) of electronics modules integrating mixed-mode ASICs, opto-electronics and local power regulation.
-Proficiency in the use of state-of-the-art CAE tools (Cadence, Altium, Autocad).
-Simulation of signal/power integrity of electronics modules.
-Coordination of the manufacturing of electronics modules with industry.
-Testing of electronics modules with laboratory instruments.
-Writing firmware and software for testing electronics modules.

Experience in the following fields would be considered an asset:

-Design and testing of flexible circuits.
-High-density interconnect techniques for ASICs (eg wire-bonding, flip-chip bonding).

Technical competencies:

-Knowledge and application of signal integrity techniques.
-Schematic and layout of electronic circuit boards.
-Testing and measurement of analog/digital electronic circuits.
-Knowledge and application of quality and reliability assurance techniques in electronics.
-Development of application firmware/software.

Behavioural competencies:

-Working in teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.
-Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
-Achieving results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
-Communicating effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented; expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point.
-Learning and sharing knowledge: keeping up-to-date with developments in own field of expertise and readily absorbing new information; sharing knowledge and expertise freely and willingly with others; coaching others to ensure knowledge transfer; proposing ways to improve or streamline existing procedures, processes and methodologies.

Language skills:

-English: ability to understand and speak the language in professional contexts, draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and make oral presentations.
-French: basic knowledge would be an asset or willingness to acquire it rapidly.
