Electronics Technician

Arbetsbeskrivning

Electronics technician (EP-ESE-BE-2020-141-LD)
Geneva, Switzerland
Contract

Company Description
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction
Are you a technician with skills in both electronics and software? Would you like to contribute to the success of CERN's High Energy Physics experiments by providing a high-quality equipment rental service? Then join the Electronics Pool team in the Electronic Systems for Experiments group and realize your potential. Take Part!

You will join the Electronic Systems for Experiments (ESE) group of the Experimental Physics (EP) department which designs and maintains electronic systems and components for the experiments at CERN and also provides a number of services for the electronics community. One of these services is the CERN Electronics Pool which evaluates, purchases, rents, maintains and supports a wide range of modular electronics equipment and instrumentation for short to medium term use in physics experiments.

Functions
As an electronics technician, you will take part in ensuring the quality and availability of general laboratory instrumentation on loan to groups building High Energy Physics experiments at CERN: you will test, qualify and evaluate equipment; design test systems for instruments under your responsibility; develop the software tools required to run the service; and provide technical support to physicists, engineers and technicians coming to CERN from all over the world and renting equipment from the electronics pool.

Your main activities will consist of:
- Testing laboratory instrumentation, performing preventive maintenance, identifying faults and, in some cases, carrying out firmware and hardware fixes;
- Participating in the daily operations of the Electronics Pool service, including maintenance and development of databases and web-based applications;
- Building up and maintaining hardware and software for test benches for laboratory instruments, optoelectronics and modular electronics;
- Actively participating in the identification/evaluation/qualification of new equipment types;
- Writing up detailed test procedure documentation as well as test reports;
- Giving direct technical support to service users including occasional on-site investigations, and linking with manufacturers for fault follow up.

Qualifications
Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Electronics or a related field.

Experience:

You have:
- Extensive experience and interest in the electronics field, ideally in the testing, calibration and maintenance of a broad range of laboratory equipment including modular electronics and instrumentation;
- Proven experience in a user support service or a customer-oriented service;
- Demonstrated experience in web development and visualisation tools;
- Initial experience in the use of SQL databases;
- Initial experience with high and low voltage DC power supplies.

Technical competencies:
- Knowledge and application of instrumentation and measurement techniques;
- Installation, operation and maintenance of data-acquisition, monitoring and control systems;
- Selection and application of modular low and high-voltage power supplies;
- Knowledge of programming techniques and languages: development of Labview and/or Python applications and of data visualization web applications (HTML, Javascript/JQuery, CSS, APEX, Pentaho or equivalent);
- Configuration and use of information management systems: PLM, EAM, SQL databases.

Behavioural competencies:
- Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements;
- Learning and sharing knowledge: seeking feedback from colleagues and other stakeholders about ways of increasing competence;
- Communicating effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented;
- Managing self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting;
- Working in teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships; contributing to promoting a positive atmosphere in the team through an optimistic and constructive attitude; addressing issues.
