Engineer for Safety Critical Systems

Arbetsbeskrivning

The European Spallation Source, ESS, a partnership of European countries, is hiring motivated and inspired people to plan, design, and construct the world’s most powerful neutron source. We seek ambitious, talented people in different fields who are excited about playing a part in the future of science in Europe.

ESS can offer a variety of things, such as passionate and international colleagues, a vibrant melting pot of diversity, and a challenging, exciting and high paced work environment. We value and need expertise, innovative minds and great ways of leading and interacting with people from all over the world.

Come and change the world with us!

ESS is now looking for an Engineer for Safety Critical Systems. You will be part of ESS's Technical Directorate and join the Integrated Control Systems (ICS) division, responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of control systems for the ESS facility including the accelerator, target station, neutron scattering instruments and conventional facilities. The Integrated Control Systems monitor and control most of the equipment at ESS. A wide range of sensing, control and automation technology from highly customized electronics specific for ESS applications to standardized PLCs for automation is being covered. The hardware scope involves a mixture from entirely in-house hardware development, through community-style development on standardized open-source code bases to adaption and configuration of off-the shelf commercial systems.

In particular you will join the Protection Systems Group whose mandate is the design, realization, operation and consolidation of the ESS Machine Protection, Personnel Safety and Oxygen Deficiency Hazard (ODH) Detection Systems.

Job description

Your main areas of responsibilities as an Integrator Engineer will be:

• Integration of the different personnel safety systems (PSS) and ODH detection systems into the ESS accelerator, target station, neutron instruments, and bunker.
• Development, verification and documentation of interfaces between personnel safety systems or ODH detection systems and equipment in the accelerator, target station and neutron instruments. Ensure compliance with the associated safety integrity levels and reaction times.
• Actively collect, evaluate and optimize requirements from the different stakeholders necessary to design personnel safety systems and ODH detection systems.
• Perform engineering design and related duties. Ensure that designs comply with relevant standards, regulations and procedures and that designs are in line with ESS availability goals.
• Actively assist during the installation and the different tests of personnel safety systems and ODH detection systems (factory acceptance test, site acceptance test, site integration and final integration tests).

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:

• Master or Bachelor in Engineering, or other relevant experience
• Experience in electrical control systems design
• Knowledge in PLC programming and automation
• Experience in working with complex systems and within a multicultural environment
• Hands-on experience with designing, integrating, analyzing, and/or optimizing the performance of critical systems
• Experience in the field of developing and evaluating dependable architectures and designs for critical and complex systems
• Experience with technology evaluation. Ability to provide new and innovative technological solutions for complex problems
• Experience with requirements solicitation and verification
• Previous experience of working in a cross functional role would be an asset
• Familiarity with the International Functional Safety Standard IEC 61511 is an advantage

We truly believe that you have the ability to teach, mentor, communicate to the point, and defend technical concepts and solutions. You have a systematic approach, can find the most optimal solution in a given situation, and are able to cope with pressure and deliver on time. Interacting with others and building good work relationships comes natural to you.
