Excellence PhD positions at Excellence Initiative Nano

Excellence PhD positions at Excellence Initiative Nano

Arbetsbeskrivning

We are looking for three highly motivated and skilled graduates interested in nanoscience and nanotechnology. The selected candidates are awarded with a PhD position, which they can place at any research group connected to the Excellence Initiative Nano at Chalmers, and with which they coordinate their specific PhD program. This is the seventh in a yearly recurring call.

Information about Excellence Initiative Nano and the positions
The Chalmers Excellence Initiative Nano coordinates research on the unique biological, chemical and physical phenomena that arise at the nanoscale, and promotes the development of technologies that utilise them. Therefore, our active collaboration with established Swedish industry and the Chalmers Ventures startup scene creates business opportunities based on nanotechnology. Our over 200 researchers localized at the Biology & Biological, Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, Microtechnology & Nanoscience, and Physics Departments are supported by an excellent infrastructure that includes a large first-class clean room for advanced micro- and nanofabrication and state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation for materials characterization. Topically, our efforts focus on the areas of Energy and Sustainability, Health, Information Technology, Nanomaterials and Quantum Technologies.

What makes these positions distinct is that as Nano Excellence PhD student you have your own funding, which gives you the freedom to choose both research group and research project. This is in stark contrast to standard PhD student positions at Chalmers that are announced by a specific research group and funded by a specific research project.

With a PhD exam in the area of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from Chalmers you will kick-start your career if you aim at academic research at the highest level, at advancing research and development in a major company or at spinning off your own idea into a startup.

Qualifications
To be eligible, the final exam of your master studies must take place (or must have taken place) between June 2021 and August 2022. If you already are accepted in a PhD school, you are not eligible to apply.

The selection of the winning candidates is based on three criteria:

1) Your MSc and BSc grades.
2) A two-page written reflection on your background and your motivation to pursue a PhD in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. This letter may contain a description of your current MSc project and/or future research interests.
3) Your performance at an interview, if you are selected among the 8 highest ranked from the two previous criteria. the interviews are preliminarily planned to take place on the 20th of April 2022.

If you are awarded one of the three positions, you have to start before the end of 2022, at the latest.

The position can be placed at any research group connected to the Excellence Initiative Nano at Chalmers, provided that the group approves. To guide you in the selection of potential host groups, you find a list of all eligible supervisors, i.e., our principle investigators, on the homepage of the Excellence Initiative Nano under Research and Profiles.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to four years but can be extended to a maximum of five years by taking on additional duties, such as teaching.
