In Early Respiratory & Immunology (Early R&I) we are working to improve the lives for millions of people worldwide suffering from chronic respiratory and immunology diseases.

Early R&I is one of three main therapeutic research areas within AstraZeneca that deliver candidate drugs into late-stage clinical development.

We are now looking to recruit a Experimental Medicine - Immunology Physician to join the R&I Translational Science and Experimental Medicine (TSEM) department. The position can be based at one of our R&D sites in either Gothenburg (SE) or Cambridge (UK).

What you'll do

The position of Experimental Medicine Immunology Physician is a key role where you will be responsible for ensuring clinical robustness of experimental medicine plans and developing novel exploratory clinical studies in rheumatology, dermatology and gastroenterology. The successful candidate will join an agile department, with a culture that is science and patient- focused, with the mission to understand disease mechanisms at the molecular level, identify the most effective target and the right patient population, and close the gap between bench science and bedside clinical practice.

You will operate in a wide range of aspects in pharmaceutical medicine and build strong relationships with a multitude of stakeholders within AstraZeneca and with external academic collaborators.

We rely on you to:

Design and deliver novel exploratory clinical studies that provide critical insights in disease mechanisms and biology
*

Develop and lead clinical collaborations with key external partners that provide critical insights in disease mechanisms, patient selection and precision medicine strategies
*

Provide clinical line of sight to progress projects and translational plans and input to target selection
*

Provide leadership in sourcing and the integrity of human tissue to enable translational research in Early R&I, ensuring all local laws, rules, governance and audits are adhered to
*

Work with Experimental Medicine Scientists to implement the Experimental Medicine strategy within Early R&I
*

Makes AZ scientifically visible by publishing scientific papers and presenting data at conferences

Essential for the role

We believe that you are a fully qualified physician (MD or equivalent) with demonstrating experimental research expertise and experience. You have specialty training or board eligibility in rheumatology/dermatology/gastroenterology/immunology/autoimmunity aligned areas and an understanding of biomarkers, biostatistics and precision medicine.

You have experience in driving projects in a matrix environment and proven leadership and stakeholder management skills.

You also possess:

A significant publication record

Ability to travel nationally and internationally
*

Good networking and communication (written and oral) skills and a strong delivery focus

Desirable for the role

*

PhD in scientific discipline
*

Extensive general medical knowledge
*

Experience in several organisations and geographic locations
*

>5 years clinical research expertise, including designing, monitoring and implementing clinical trials and interpreting trial results
*

Drug Discovery and Development Experience with a thorough understanding of pharmaceutical safety, reporting and surveillance processes
