Your team
Lead by the HSE Group manager, safety group consist of radiation safety, experimental safety and general safety team.
We are a group of 20 personnel specializing in various safety aspects namely radiation safety, chemical safety (gases included), machine safety, fire safety, environmental safety and security. The team provides expertise and support for projects and operations in MAX IV by ensuring the compliance to Swedish safety standards and legal requirements, despite the challenging environment of a research facility that explores the unknown relentlessly.

MAX IV is looking for a gas and chemical safety officer to join the Experimental Safety group. The user experiments at MAX IV involve the handling of inert, flammable and sometimes toxic gases. Every experiment undertaken at MAX IV requires an experimental risk assessment. You will work closely in the team and with the beamline scientists to identify risks & mitigations in user experiments, assist beamline scientist in preparation for safe execution of experiments and work with the experimental safety team to ensure the user experiment processes are managed effectively. Your experience will be a valuable asset when building new experimental set ups and infrastructure systems associated gases.
Your main work tasks will be
- Support overall experimental safety work process.
- Evaluate and provide solutions for gas and chemical safety aspects of user experiments.
- Support beamline scientists and users concerning gas and chemical safety requests, logistics and requirements.
- Support the relevant groups when building up new infrastructure associated with experimental gases.
- Supporting beamline in safe activity for user operations.
- Support experiment hall safety implementations.
- On call or standby operations will be an integral part of this position.
To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications
- M.Sc. in Chemistry/ Chemical Engineering. Ph.D. In Chemistry/ Chemical Engineering.
- Knowledge and experience practical toxic or flammable chemical/gas handling and chemical/gas safety management.
- Good command in spoken and written English.
Below are seen as merits
- Knowledge and experience carrying out chemical/gas risk assessments for experiments in synchrotron facilities or previous experience in user experiments.
- It is considered a strong asset if the applicant has an understanding of the technical systems on a synchrotron beamline. Ideally obtained by work experience or extensive user activity in synchrotron facility.
- Good command in Swedish language.
As a person you are pragmatic, strong collaborative and communication skills, and service-minded.

MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University.
