MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light.
Experimental Safety Lead
The user experiments at MAX IV involve the handling of inert, flammable and sometimes toxic gases.
Every experiment undertaken at MAX IV requires an experimental risk assessment. We are looking for an Experimental safety lead to join the Safety group at MAX IV .You will lead the experimental safety process and coordinate contributions from different functions from MAX IV. You will work closely with different functions in the organization and with the beamline scientists to identify risks & mitigations in user experiments. You will assist beamline scientist in preparation for safe execution of experiments and ensure the user experiment process is managed effectively. You will also be in charge in managing documentation and record keeping ensuring the traceability of information in experimental safety.
Tasks and responsibilities:
- Establish and lead overall experimental safety process workflow.
- Lead overall experimental safety review and issue safety letters/decisions.
- Coordinate overall safety input within safety team and other groups in preparation of user experiments.
- Support beamline in safe commissioning activities for user operations.
- Establish communications with local contact and users.
- Lead continuous improvements with User Office on Experimental Safety requirement for Users.
- Lead Experiment Hall safety implementations.
- Beamline Floor support roles may be present in this role.
- On call or standby operations will be an integral part of this position.
Qualifications
- M.Sc. Alternatively, Ph.D. In Chemistry/ Chemical Engineering or any related field.
- Strong leadership, collaborative, service-minded, and communication skills.
- Knowledge and experience of practical safety management is essential.
- A background in implementing risk mitigations, hazard analyses, and safety studies such as HAZOP, HAZID, and JHA) is essential.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience working in large-scale facilities is a strong asset.
- Experience in User Experiment safety support roles is an advantage.
- Good command in spoken and written English. Good command in Swedish language is a merit.
- It is considered a strong asset if the applicant has an understanding of the safety processes and systems on a synchrotron beamline. Ideally obtained by work experience or extensive user activity.
