Expert Scientist Insulin Sensitivity In Vivo, Preclinical Research in Drug Discovery, Bioscience Department, CVMD iMed
AstraZeneca is a global, innovation-driven biopharmaceutical business that focuses on the discovery, development and commercialization of prescription medicines for some of the world?s most serious diseases. But we're more than one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies. At AstraZeneca we strive to be a unique workplace that inspires innovation and collaboration, where employees are empowered to express diverse perspectives - and are made to feel valued, energized and rewarded for their ideas and creativity.
The Role
The successful candidate will play a key role in building specific core competence of a newly established team whose mission is to provide state-of-the-art expertise including preclinical experimental competence in insulin resistance. These capabilities are needed to initiate new projects and progress them from target validation through to selection of candidate medicines for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Within the project context, the team works closely with other internal scientists representing a range of different disciplines (e.g. in vitro biology, chemistry etc) and collaborates with external academic groups and contract laboratories.
Major Responsibilities of the Role
Develop and optimize necessary in vivo methods, from routine screening in standardized disease area models to complex in vivo methods in conscious rodents (eg glucose clamps)
Propose and drive new targets into the project portfolio including representing in vivo activities in internal multidisciplinary project groups
Support the team leader to drive innovation and scientific excellence in the Insulin Sensitivity disease area through internal scientific development, external collaborations, publications and competitive awareness.
Actively seek, establish and manage external collaborations as needed
Minimum Requirements
PhD and Post Doc in a world-class metabolic disease laboratory
Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of: in vivo metabolism; the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance; both experimental and current therapeutic pharmacodynamic principles for improving glucose control; as well as the drug discovery and development processes
Extensive hands on experience with in vivo metabolic studies including those specifically used to assess insulin sensitivity
At least 3 first or senior author publications in high level journals in the field of in vivo insulin resistance
Outstanding team skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills
