Exterior department within R&D is responsible for the whole process regarding design and development of Exterior Systems such as glass,
exterior- and interior-mirrors, bumpers, trim moldings, lightning, cleaning systems, roof systems and external plastic covers.

The department consists of approx. 200 employees and additional consultants. We are responsible for the development of Exterior parts for the whole range of products within Volvo Cars and the development is conducted in close cooperation with our suppliers. The development is mainly carried out in Gothenburg but we also have employees in China and at our plants in Ghent and Gothenburg.

Exterior Trim design team

The section Exterior Trim, within the Exterior department, consists of three groups: Glass and mirrors, Ornamentation and Roof system and Functional black trim. Within Exterior Trim we have created, a highly flexible design team currently consisting of 20 design engineers, both men and women, who are responsible for the design of the whole product range for the section. This means that the number of components and different processes and materials have a wide span that gives good opportunities for personal development.

Our long-term goal is that all parts should be developed in-house. This means that a lot of efforts are spent on building experience and working development such as: Templates, 3DPMi, Mold flow analysis, CAE simulations, and lessons learned etc. in our effort to continuously improve and be more efficient.

Glass & Mirrors are now looking for a design engineer for future projects within glass development.

PSS200 Glass & Mirrors today consists of 25 persons with responsibility for the development of glass, exterior rear-view mirror, interior rear-view mirror and WEM-cover. The work is performed in an international environment in close co-operation with, for example, styling, purchasing, manufacturing, different attribute areas, our factories, as well as external suppliers.

The wide range of components and technical areas in the group as well as all future projects allow us to offer an exciting and challenging work in a group with lots of competence, good atmosphere and team spirit!

In the work, you will be in connection and communicating with suppliers from all over the world, which demands business acumen. As design engineer, we want you to be a part of the good team spirit and that you could motivate, coach and learn other team members.

You should see complex, technical problems as a challenge and be able to suggest different solutions.

You should be able to propose design solutions that best fulfill all requirements for the system/component. Understanding the complete picture is needed to understand the role of your system in the complete car and your role and tasks as a part of a complete car project.

Tasks and deliveries

Develop technical solutions from idea to agreed solution, primarily for glass
Develop technical solution that fulfills targets within Time, Technique and Cost frames
Develop 3D models for virtual verification and manufacturing of proto tools/part for physical verification
Develop 3D-modells and 2D-drawings for manufacturing of production parts
Contribute to secure functional models and functional sections
Participate in test- and verification planning
Contribute to secure geometry and final demands
Maintain and develop our templates for glass
Maintain and develop analysis methods for Head Up Display

Required qualifications

Good knowledge in Catia V5
Knowledge in Team Center and other systems within Volvo Cars that handles drawings and 3-D models is advantageous
Knowledge of stable modeling and CAD Advance is advantageous
Several years of experience of earlier design jobs within automotive
Knowledge about working principles for product development and the system used in that process
A relevant technical education at least on level of BSc or similar
Strong connection or experience from some or many of the systems/components we are responsible for is advantageous; preferable is good knowledge of designing glass
