Department of Ecology
At the Ecology Centre of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), in Uppsala, Sweden, we conduct research on populations, communities and ecosystems. We generate knowledge on how land use and climate affects animals, plants, nutrient cycling and greenhouse gas balance, and develop sustainable solutions for the future. Active outreach and frequent dialogue with stakeholders are key activities.

The Department of Ecology at the Ecology Centre, SLU, Uppsala is hiring several field assistants for multiple projects in 2020. The field work will be conducted in several parts of Sweden (Uppsala, Skåne, Halland and Västra Götaland). Housing for field work outside the Uppsala area are provided for by the projects. We are looking for persons to assist with collection and processing of samples from the field experiments. The assistants will work with projects related to landscape ecology, soil ecology, biological pest control, crop pollination and effects of agricultural management on insects and ecosystem service delivery. The assistants will gain experience in applied crop protection, ecology, entomology and sustainable agriculture.  

Duties:
The assistants will help collect and process data from field experiments using insect traps (sticky traps, pitfall traps, pan traps etc.), sweep netting, soil sampling and by observing and counting plants and insects in the field. They will also sort, count and compile collected material in the laboratory.

Qualifications:
Applicants should preferably have, or study for, a Bachelor or Master degree in biology, ecology, agronomy or a subject deemed as equivalent by the employer. Applicants should have a strong interest in either one or more of these disciplines: crop protection, nature conservation, entomology, pollination ecology and ecological field work. The applicants should be able to work both independently and as part of a research team. Earlier experience of ecological field work (preferably using any of the above mentioned methods) is meriting, as is knowledge of plant and insect taxonomy. The applicant should be attentive to details, and have the capacity to work in the field irrespective of weather conditions for extended hours during peak workload periods. A driver’s license is required. We put strong emphasis on personal characters such as collaborative skills.

Form of employment:
Time limited position with a possibility of extension . From 2020-05-04 at the earliest, to 2020-10-02 at the latest. Start and end date, as well as the duration of employment vary depending on which project you are hired for.
