Field assistants to the Ecology Centre

Department of Ecology
The Department of Ecology at the Ecology Centre, SLU Uppsala, is hiring field assistants for the period May-August 2022 for multiple projects. The fieldwork will be conducted in different parts of Sweden depending on the project (in or around Uppsala, in Västra Götaland or in Skåne). We are looking for persons to assist with collection and processing of samples from field experiments or to perform inventories of vascular plants in grasslands. The assistants will work with projects related to biodiversity, landscape ecology, biological pest control, pollination, soil ecology, and sampling methodology. The assistants will gain experience in applied crop protection, ecology, entomology, soil ecology and sustainable agriculture.  

Duties:
The assistants will collect data from field experiments by sampling insects (using Malaise and sticky traps, pitfall traps, beating trays, sweep netting etc.) and other animals (game cameras and audio recorders), perform direct observations of insects on plants, take soil samples and do strawberry quality assessments, or carry out plant inventories. They will also sort, count and compile collected material in the laboratory, as well as help with emerging logistical needs (packing and shipping of packages etc.).

Qualifications:
Applicants should preferably have, or study for, a Bachelor or Master degree in biology, ecology, agronomy or an equivalent subject. Applicants should have a strong interest in crop protection, nature conservation, entomology, pollination ecology, soil ecology and/or ecological field work, and should be able to work both independently and as part of a research team. Earlier experience of ecological fieldwork (preferably using any of the above-mentioned methods) is meriting, as is plant and insect taxonomical knowledge. The applicant should be attentive to details, and have the capacity to work in the field irrespective of weather conditions for extended hours during peak workload periods. We put great emphasis on social skills and personal qualities such as collaborative skills. A driver’s license is required.

Placement:
Uppsala, but for several of the positions the work will be conducted in south/southeast of Skåne or close to Lidköping. State in your application in what part of Sweden you can work.

Form of employment:
Seasonal employment during the period May-August 2022. The announcement is for several positions and your application is of interest even if you only are available part of the period May-August. State in your application the time period that you are available.
