We are seeking a summer assistant to join the Stream and Riparian ecology lab at SLU Umeå. We are looking for an enthusiastic person to assist field surveys in streams and riparian zones. Many of the field surveys will center on inventories of forest vegetation (both understory and overstory), so we expect the applicant to have knowledge and interest in this area. The ideal candidate will be able to work comfortably in the field. Experiences with forestry, streams, riparian zones and ecological sampling methods are beneficial but not required. The applicant might also be able to collect data for own master thesis project that relates to the sampling surveys and will be supervised by the group leader.

Duties:
The work tasks will vary and the assistant will be helping with multiple projects at multiple locations. The work will be performed in all weather conditions, in aquatic and riparian habitats and over rough terrain. This will at times require hikes, heavy lifting and manual labour. The work will require extensive driving (including forest roads) and driving licence and experience are required. Some laboratory work might be involved (sorting out samples, water chemistry analyses etc.) and computer data inputs will be required at the end of the field season.

Qualifications:
The person we look for is flexible, can accommodate schedule changes, and long days in the field. It´s a merit if the applicant have completed or is undertaking the SLU masters program ' Forest Ecology and Sustainable Management' because many of the work tasks will relate to the knowledge and experience obtained in the program.

Place of work:
Umeå

Work will occur in the field mostly in the county of Västerbotten but several trips to Uppsala county will be necessary. Most of the field trips will be one day trips with return to Umeå, however accommodation in more distant areas over a few nights will be provided if necessary.
