Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Department of Forest Mycology and Pathology, Uppsala, announces an open position as Researcher in Agricultural Plant Pathology -Fungal interactions in relation to plant pathology and biological disease control? At SLU we conduct research, teach and inform about the opportunities, and possible risks incurred, when using our forests, landscapes, soils and animals in different ways. Main campuses are located at Alnarp, Skara, Umeå and Uppsala. Faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences is the largest of the four faculties of SLU. Our area of activity covers a wide range of disciplines, spanning over agriculture, food and biotechnology to natural resources, environment and landscape planning. The cluster also consists of departments of Chemistry, Food Science, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Plant Biology and Forest Genetics, together representing an excellent life science environment and a progressive commitment for the future. The Department of Mycology and Plant Pathology conducts both fundamental and applied research, focused on interactions between plants, fungi and other microorganisms and their roles in forest and agricultural systems. Research area: The successful applicant will be part of a program with special focus on molecular mechanisms in plant/pathogen and fungal/fungal interactions. Interaction biology has the potential to generate knowledge important for basic and applied questions in agriculture and industry such as identification of fungal virulence determinants, mechanisms of biological disease control and enzyme discovery and design for biotechnological applications. The interactions will be studied at the molecular, cellular and organism level, using genetic transformation techniques, next generation sequencing and evolutionary genetics approaches. Fungal biocontrol agents belonging to the genera Clonostachys and Trichoderma, and their interactions with fungal and oomycete plant pathogens will be in focus. The aim is to improve understanding of how biological disease control can interfere with pathogen infection of host plants and disease development. This knowledge is highly relevant for agriculture as it may be exploited when designing biocontrol systems with improved efficiency under field conditions. The successful candidate will be part of a research team and thus an integrated part of the ongoing research program on agricultural plant pathology and collaboration with already established projects is expected. The candidate will have good possibilities to build up a personal research profile within the subject area.
