Arbetsbeskrivning
The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology conducts high-quality research and education in chemical sciences and molecular life sciences. Our research and education focus on a deep understanding of chemical and biological processes in cells and in the environment. We address important societal issues such as antibiotic resistance, cancer, brain diseases, environmental problems and climate change. In this way, we contribute to achieving the UN's global goals for sustainable development in the areas of good health and well-being, sustainable energy for all, sustainable cities and communities, and combating climate change. The department is an international environment with interdisciplinary collaborations in both research and education, and contributes strongly to the University of Gothenburg's top ranking in life science.
The department is responsible for postgraduate education in the subject area Natural Sciences with a focus on chemistry, biophysics, biology and educational science. In addition, the department hosts educational programs in molecular biology, genomics and systems biology, chemistry, organic chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry, as well as prescription education. The department collaborates with various societal actors such as schools, business and authorities. The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology has around 200 employees. We are located in central premises on Natrium, Campus Medicinareberget in Gothenburg.
The research group develops theory and implements it on computers in order to study chemical processes in the gas phase and in condensed phase. We are interested in chemical kinetics, spectroscopy and dynamics in general, but focus on processes that are relevant to astrochemistry. The present project concerns formation, destruction and survival of nano- to micrometer sized dust particles in our Universe, including early galaxies, areas close to black holes and our local Universe. We will study dust particles, often silicon and/or carbon based, at a molecular level and their interactions with other particles (molecules/atoms, ions/electrons) and electromagnetic radiation. The project is financed by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg research foundation and is run jointly with three research groups from Chalmers University of Technology, which particularly contribute astronomical observations. See also https://cmb.gu.se/english/about_us/staff?userId=xnymgu for information about the research group and https://cosmic-dust.se for information on this project.
Duties
Taking part in the development of theoretical models and the implementation of these in computer codes. Also already completed, sometimes commercial, codes can be used. The codes are to be run, the results analyzed and prepared for publication in international journals. To participate in relevant collaborations and to present obtained results to colleagues and/or at conferences is expected.
Qualifications
You must have PhD in Computational Chemistry or similar. Experience of quantum chemistry/electron structure calculations, QM/MM methodology, molecular dynamics, and finding reaction paths. Experience of astrochemistry. Ability to collaborate, plan research and analyze results as well as ability to communicate science orally and in writing is advantageous as is experience of supervising doctoral students
Employment
Fixed term, fulltime during 360 days at the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology
